Quarterback

The player who leads the offense and receives the ball at the start of nearly every play.

The quarterback is usually a team's most visible and highest-paid player. They receive the ball from the center at the start of every play and decide, within seconds, whether to throw a pass, hand off to a running back, or run with the ball themselves.

The role demands a rare mix of qualities: reading the defense quickly, passing accuracy, decision-making under pressure, and the ability to lead the rest of the team, both on the field and in the locker room. Many top quarterbacks spend hours studying film to anticipate opposing defensive schemes.

Given how central the position is, an injury to the starting quarterback is usually the most talked-about story of the week for any team.
